Her husband, Charles, a soldier in the United States Confederate Army, left home ambitious and determined to resist invasion from the North and was killed in action by a Union cannon strike. Victor, their 7-year old son, understands why his father isn't coming home and cares for his mother through her own attempts to do the same.
